Samarbeid for arbeid

Virkelig. Samarbeid for arbeid?

Stoltenberg skrev;

I think that Norway could make a lot more use of its myth, legend and history in the film branch than it does now. In my opinion the cosmology and cosmogeny is fertile soil for the fantasy. The world of the gods is as exciting as the Olympians or any other pantheon. The legends/sagas are made more use of by other countries and the Vikings are a goldmine for the fantasy, adventure and historical genre. We have actors and a film milieu already in place. What about encouraging/financing the writing and making of films about Norwegian history mythology etc. The Vikings have captured people’s imagination all over the world. Perhaps we should capitalize a little more than we do on it. Almost everybody speaks English so producing English language films should be no problem and it could be good PR for the country, for example drawing more attention to Norwegian export products. It isn’t a new business but it could lead to growth in an already existing one.

I don’t want nobody to give me nothin’, open up the door, I’ll get it myself – James Brown

I stumbled into a conversation with a Finn once. He had recently come back from something like 20 years in the USA and was touring his old haunts in Scandinavia. I asked him if there was anything that he noticed in particular about his old home/s having newly returned after such a long absence. He had one thing to say. In America they make it easy for you to do things. If you want to start a business, an organisation or whatever, the system was designed to facilitate a speedy and easy take off, to help. In Scandinavia the mentality seemed to be that the authorities want to make it as difficult as possible for anyone who wants to try to start or do something and their neighbors sit in their houses and chuckle gleefully at the unfortunate person’s troubles seemingly unaware that if and when, the day comes when they want to do something it will be their turn to be crushed under the weight of the communes and state. That was his only comment, the one thing he noticed.

If there is anything in what he says, it may be an idea to look closely at how the USA has organized its system, in the area of the creation and running of businesses, in order to to learn how to be of more help and less hindrence to people who want to create something in Norway.

Don’t kill the goose that is going to lay the golden egg

The way things are now if you start up a business it had better go from zero til full success in six seconds or less, otherwise it will fail. Most will have to take a loan from the bank, rent a local which will cost a lot, if one doesn’t rent a “cheap” one which means low standard and being off the beaten track. In both cases there is a good chance that you will have to pay down a deposit in advance. There are many other costs such as insurance, material/goods, wages etc. and let us not forget taxes. If you want to protect yourself against being personally responsible for debt incurred, you have to have a limited company which means more cash up front and so on and so forth. In addition one still has to pay all the expenses connected to being alive, house rent or taxes, electricity, food etc..

On a course on how to start your own business the class was informed that it took eight years working 14 hours a day to establish a new business if one didn’t have a ridiculous amount of capital that could be substituted for the blood and sweat. The hammer comes down almost immediately after you start. The system as it is doesn’t seem to take into consideration that it takes those eight years of hard work and lean times to build something up. It seems to assume that every attempt at starting a business is made by extremely rich people who can throw mountains of money at practical problems. Take for example advertising. Its importance secures it a large part of the budget in big businesses. Some small guy starting a small business doesn’t have a large budget. Even a small advert in the papers costs enough to make your hair stand on end. The only possibility there, is word of mouth. It is the best form of advertising but it takes time.

In many of the third world countries, especially those which had newly achieved independence the governments had something called pioneer status. It meant newly formed businesses could e.g.:

1/ Buy land at a reduced price to build a place of business or factory.
2/ Operate tax free for three to five years before the tax man descended upon them with his well hung proboscis.

Perhaps that may be an unwelcome thought in some circles. Regardless of what it turns out to be we should do something to ease the burden and create a time/resource space so that we don’t kill things before they get a chance to grow. Maybe pioneer status in Norway could mean that new businesses don’t have to pay full price for advertising in the pioneer status period, just like minors pay half price on the bus or at the cinema for example. One could have a series of such privileges crafted in a way that in effect gets already established businesses to help the fledgling firms get to the stage of being able to fly. After all, once a business is established it contributes to the maintenance of all the others through buying, producing and selling as well as creating work and wages so that other to buy and consume.

Export goods with great “potenceial”

A Norwegian lady arrived in Singapore and went to the Hotel where she had booked a room. The following morning she came down to have breakfast, only to meet several men waiting for her in the foyer. It became apparent that someone working at the hotel had informed these men that a Norwegian had arrived and that they had come specifically to meet her.

They were convinced that the lady had reindeer horn with her and they were very anxious to get it. They were very enthusiastic about buying it and harassed her, offering more and more money in their certainty that she had some of this horn with her. In eastern folk medicine it is used to beef up male potency. Judging by the number of people over there it does a great job.

It is obvious that there are some Normen who travel there and sell a suitcase full or two to hungry buyers. If it is not already being done and if there is still the same need for it that she experienced, I think this could be a great export business for the Sami people. They could earn a lot of money exporting reindeer horn to the east instead of using it for knife handles or alternatively they could probably sell every knife with a reindeer horn handle that they make to those people.

Perhaps the government could investigate the possibility and do the job of setting it up if for the Sami, if the light shows green. Perhaps other types of animal horn are also used over their.

N.B.

It would probably be best to sell as reindeer horn in its raw form and not marketed as or refined into a “medicinal” product, since there are a lot of hindrances and problems created for natural medicines and folk medicine in general in Norwegian law. All one needs to do is find the people who want to buy it. There are a lot of other great natural remedies which we have here in Norway and which could find a place in the international market if it were not for the prejudice against them arising from certain vested interests.

Stonemeal ecological gold

The use of stonemeal, rock dust or rock powder (steinmel,) instead of fertilizer (kunstgjødsel) is an ecological winner and Norway is rich in this raw material. Every year we in Norway pollute the north sea with 2,000,000 tons of fertilizer. We could cut that out if we use stonemeal instead. Mineral content and concentration depend on the kind of stone but there is still massive potential.

It is already in production in many places, gravel production, tunnel boring, stone polishing and is used a lot in building under the name of subus. It can also be found in natural deposits left from the last ice age.

There is no danger of using too much (overjødsling) since there is no easily accessible nitrogen in it. It puts trace minerals back into the earth which the fertilizer produced today does not. Together with organic fertilizer it can be used to increase the amount of arable land in Norway. The list of fantastic properties goes on and on. Copy and paste the links below into you browser and take a look at the two clips on YouTube. They are from a BBC program.

At http://forskningsradet.no/ mention is made of it. There was some research done on it from 20.10.1994 – 31.12.1997 but I found no results. It seems that the idea was dropped. I wonder why, since it really has superstar potential. It may be that the agricultural chemical industry choked the idea to death. It’s an old fight which started in the late 1800’s. You can read about it at google books. The title is “Bread from Stones” by Dr. Julius Hensel

(If you google Dr. Julius Hensel two links to that book in Google books come up. One is marked fiction and the other science. I have no idea why but the facts can be confirmed many other places so I take it that the fiction categorization in the one link is a mistake.)

It really is incredible. You just have to take a look at this possibility. I heard about it some time ago from a friend who knew someone, a Norwegian researcher, who had tested the claims made about it and found them to be true but was unable to get anyone interested. I read his report.

It even acts to a certain degree as a natural non-toxic pesticide in several scenarios (see a short abstact on one such use of it here):

EFFECT OF STONE MEAL ON CONTROL OF SEED-BORNE DISEASES IN WHEAT
http://hrcak.srce.hr/index.php?show=clanak&id_clanak_jezik=52782&lang=en

AND it takes carbon out of the air. That should be worth a few C02 certificates.

If we manage to export that to Poland or at least help them to produce and use their own, Østersjøen will return to a healthy state.

Using it will return the mineral and vitamin content of various food plants back to the levels they were at in the sixties. Today the various vegetables and fruit contain anything from 20% to 80% less depending on which fruit or vegetable it is.

The reason for this is that when fertilizer was first developed, because of evident mineral depletion in soil used for agriculture, research was done and it was found that when phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium were added to the soil the plant grew healthy and strong and the produce was big and juicy. What they did not think of was that although the plant had it good the trace minerals which allow it to assimilate or produce the nutrients we eat it for were not being replaced. The result is, that over the years the soil has been grossly depleted of these substances.

I could go on and on. There is so much good to say about steinmel in an agricultural and ecological context. I think that there are honors to be won on this one.

Finding the obvious

Jens Stoltenberg skrev:

In my opinion Johan Kallak was a Norwegian Tessla. He produced several top of the line inventions which were far in advance of their time. One of them was a wood burning oven which burnt 100% of the wood. This meant more heat for less wood and no carbon monoxide pollution due to incomplete combustion. He tried to get Jøtul to put it in production but the offer they made him was, let’s say, less than attractive. Unable to build an oven factory himself he was stuck in an impasse.

He also invented an apparatus which took all pollution out of car exhaust and developed his own version of a sterling engine. Each of these things on their own have been and are gold mines waiting to be recognized. Together they mean much cleaner energy even for those who are dependent on getting electricity from fossil fuels. One might be able to keep nuclear power stations at bay with that combination, if you want to, that is.

The wood oven story was pretty much the story of his life as an inventor, though some of these fantastic inventions have eventually been given attention. Universitetet for miljø og biovitenskap på Ås (tidligere Norges Landbrukshøgskole) has used his tractor to develop a new prototype for what is called “en hydraulisk styrt traktor” He worked with Volvo on reducing exhaust pollution in their cars but if I’ve heard right there is lot of his invention in that area which has not yet come to light. The same goes for his wood oven. Eventually, in his old age, broke down and gave in to Jøtul but they are only using part of his invention there also.

Basically his ingenuity graced his garage/workshop for many decades and now, after his death on Tuesday 24. March 2009 at 101 years old, they grace the garage of the Transporthistorisk Museum in Trøgstad to which he bequethed them. He also wrote a book called “Mannen fra Dillevik : Historien om Trøgstad-oppfinneren Johan Kallak” It’s difficult for me to find on the net but there is at least one copy to be found at Trøgstad bibliotek. You might want to read that.

There is a film clip in Norwegian on him at YouTube:

Johan Kallak – norges “ukjente super-oppfinner”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWZt9frpb_w

If we look at his life we will find a lot of the hindrances that the creative and ingenious meet.

Some of his problems:

He took out patents on some of his inventions. His problem with that was that they cost a lot of money and once you have one, you have to pay every year. That becomes a rather large burden if the invention is not quickly developed into a product and starts earning money. The patent business seems to consider invention a matter for large businesses with lots of money and tailor their prices in accordance.

Vested interests worked against him. This does not only mean big business, just to get that said. Here are couple of examples:

  • In 1936 he made an ice saw which did 80 man hours work in one hour. This was not well received by the ice sawing community whose livelihood became threatened: http://www.smaalensveven.no/Modules/theme.aspx?ObjectType=Article&ElementID=11578&Category.ID=35133
  • General motors refused one of his inventions when he approached them and then took out a patent on it themselves, (http://www.ntnu.no/gemini/2004-03/20-21.htm)

He also invented a system for energy production through the use of gravity. I doubt anyone has yet done anything with it.

He won prizes locally and internationally, was featured in Popular Science Jan 1960. I remember that there was an article about his mini-tractor in one of the Norwegian weekly magazines back in the sixties when he won a prize on it. He tried hard to realize the massive potential his inventions had and failed. The question that arises in my mind is: how could our public authorities miss all of this or know about it and do nothing or not enough, to bring those babies into this world? Norway has lost a lot and is far from where it could have been with this one man’s inventions alone. I doubt he is the only one in Norway with such a story.

Obvious it is that he had problems dealing with the governmental and commercial aspects involved in getting his inventions into production and getting some money for them. He was an inventor, not a bureaucrat. IMO neither did he have the shark-like qualities required for survival in the business world, nor the snake-like qualities that would enable him to slither and contort his way through the tangled weave of red tape and negotiate the cult-like church of “byråkratiets velde” and “skjema-terror.”

My suggestion for a solution

Create an office or myndighet or whatever, which will protect these people from the sharks, help them with red tape, financing and organizing and very importantly, employ some people who are able to recognize valuables of the future. My guess is that they most likely will be found amongst those weird guys who people laugh at because of their strange ideas and sometimes, behavior. Work closely with Norsk Oppfinnerforening – (www.nof.no/norge/). They tend to have contact with our unrecognized genii.
